A Short Course on Multivariate and Multiple Discrete-Continuous Choice Modeling Methods

TBD National Center organized “A Short Course on Multivariate and Multiple Discrete-Continuous Choice Modeling Methods,” which took place on May 22, 2024, in the heart of the Georgia Institute of Technology campus in Atlanta, GA.

With over 30 participants from academia, industry, and public agencies, this course provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to learn advanced choice modeling methods directly from the pioneers of these techniques, Professors Chandra Bhat and Abdul Rawoof Pinjari.

The course covered the multinomial probit model, the Multiple Discrete-Continuous Extreme Value (MDCEV) model and its variants, and the multivariate ordered-response probit (MORP) model. It also introduced a fast and accurate analytic approximation approach for evaluating the multivariate cumulative normal distribution (MVNCD) function, developed by Dr. Bhat and his team, offering a much faster alternative to traditional simulation methods.

We were also overjoyed to have a legendary figure in discrete choice modeling, Professor Frank Koppelman, inaugurate the short course. Dr. Koppelman, an Emeritus Professor from Northwestern University, was the PhD advisor of both TBD Director Chandra Bhat and TBD Associate Director Patricia Mokhtarian.

The short course was followed by the Grand Finale Event of our sister university transportation center, TOMNET.
